Welcome. This site is operated by the moderneer, LLC ("Company," "we," "us," or "our"). It's a place where we publish writing and where readers can subscribe to receive it by email. We value your trust and are committed to protecting your personal information.

This Privacy Policy ("Policy") explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have when you visit this site or subscribe to it. By using the site or subscribing, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Scope

This Policy applies when you:

  • Visit or browse this site.
  • Subscribe to receive our writing by email (as a free or, if offered, paid member).
  • Contact us or reply to our emails.

It does not cover our main website (themoderneer.com), which has its own separate privacy policy, or any third-party site or platform we may link to.

2. Age Requirements

We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 16. If you are under 16, please do not subscribe or submit any personal information. 3. Information We Collect

We keep data collection to a minimum. We may collect:

  • Subscription details. Your email address, and your name if you choose to provide it, when you subscribe.
  • Membership and email activity. Your subscription status and newsletter preferences, and engagement data such as whether you opened an email or clicked a link in it.
  • Technical and usage data. Standard information collected automatically when you visit, such as a temporarily processed IP address, browser and device type, and which pages you viewed. Our analytics are privacy-friendly: this data is anonymized and is not used to track you across other sites.

We do not collect payment card details directly. If paid subscriptions are offered, payments are handled by our payment processor (see Section 6); we never see or store your full card number.

4. How We Collect It

  • Directly from you when you subscribe, update your preferences, or contact us.
  • Automatically through our hosting platform and our built-in, cookie-free analytics, which record anonymized visit data.
  • Essential cookies only. Our site uses strictly necessary cookies to keep you signed in to your member account and to keep the site secure. We do not use advertising, tracking, or third-party analytics cookies, so a cookie consent banner is not required. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though doing so may affect your ability to stay signed in.

5. How We Use Your Information

We use your information only to:

  • Deliver the writing and newsletters you subscribed to.
  • Manage your subscription and respond to your messages.
  • Understand, in aggregate, which content readers find useful, so we can improve what we publish.
  • Keep the site secure and meet our legal obligations.

If paid subscriptions are offered, we also use the relevant information to process payments and manage your billing and access.

We do not use your information for advertising or to build marketing profiles.

6. Who We Share It With

We don't share your personal information except with the limited service providers that make this site work, or where the law requires it:

  • Hosting / platform provider. The service that hosts this site (Ghost) and stores subscriber records.
  • Email delivery (Mailgun). We use Mailgun to send our newsletters and account emails. Mailgun processes subscriber email addresses to deliver messages and records delivery, open, and click data.
  • Payment processor (Stripe). Applies only if paid subscriptions are offered. Stripe processes payments securely on our behalf; card details go directly to Stripe and are not stored by us.
  • Legal authorities. We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or valid legal process, or to protect our legal rights or safety.
  • Business transfers. If the business is merged, acquired, or sold, subscriber information may transfer as part of that transaction; we will notify you of any material change.

These providers are bound by their own privacy commitments and may only use your data to provide their service to us.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral ("targeted") advertising.

7. Data Retention

We keep your subscription information for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your data, we will remove it, except where we're required to retain certain records to comply with the law. Anonymized analytics data is retained in aggregate.

8. Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Your Rights

Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR, the CCPA, and other U.S. state laws), you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Delete your personal data (subject to legal exceptions).
  • Opt out of marketing emails at any time, using the unsubscribe link in any email.
  • Port your data to another provider.

10. International Visitors

We are based in the United States, and your information may be processed here or in other countries where our service providers operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) for international transfers.

We may update this Policy from time to time. The "Last Updated" date above reflects the current version. If we make material changes, we'll post a notice on the site or, where appropriate, email subscribers.
